What Tucson charter school athletics look like at Academy Del Sol

Tucson charter school athletics at Academy Del Sol, students playing soccer

Our program is built around participation, effort, and growth. Rather than focusing only on winning, coaches help students develop skills, confidence, and good sportsmanship. As a result, kids who are new to a sport feel welcome to try, while returning players get room to improve. Soccer is a favorite, and you will often find our teams practicing together after school. Beyond team sports, physical education keeps every student active during the week. You can find current offerings on our Athletics page.

Firebirds and Roadrunners

School spirit runs deep across our two campuses. In west Tucson, our Star Valley students compete as the Firebirds. Meanwhile, in central Tucson, our Roger Road students represent the Roadrunners. Both communities cheer their teams on, and that shared pride helps students feel connected to something bigger than themselves. You can learn more about each campus on the Star Valley page and the Roger Road page.

Why Tucson charter school athletics matter

Sports teach lessons that are hard to find in a textbook. Specifically, students practice teamwork, discipline, and how to bounce back after a tough day. Then they carry those habits into their studies. In fact, many families notice that time on a team helps their child stay focused and motivated at school. Athletics also support health and well-being, since regular activity builds strength, energy, and a positive way to handle stress. In addition, being part of a team gives students a strong sense of belonging.

Getting started in athletics

Joining a team is easier than many families expect. To begin, students simply express interest and show up ready to learn. Coaches then help newcomers pick up the basics, so no one has to feel like an expert on day one. As a result, first-time players and experienced athletes practice side by side. Family support makes it even better, because when parents come to games and cheer, the whole community grows closer. Above all, we want athletics to be fun, since a positive first experience can shape healthy habits for life.

Character on and off the field

The lessons that stick often have little to do with the scoreboard. When a student learns to encourage a teammate, show up on time, and give honest effort, those habits travel home and into the classroom. Coaches at Academy Del Sol model respect and patience, and they treat every practice as a chance to grow.

Students also learn that mistakes are part of getting better, which takes the fear out of trying something hard. As a result, families frequently tell us their child is more responsible and more confident after a season on the team. In the long run, those qualities matter far more than any single win or loss.

A balanced K-8 experience

What sets Academy Del Sol apart is the way we blend fine arts, strong academics, and Tucson charter school athletics into one connected experience. A student might perform in a class production, work through a hands-on science project, and then head to soccer practice, all in the same week. Because we serve students from kindergarten through eighth grade, kids can grow in these areas year after year. That steady progression is one of the biggest advantages of a K-8 school, since students never have to start over somewhere new. When you are ready to learn more or to Apply Now for the 2026-27 school year, reach out through our contact page, and we would be glad to help your child find a sport they enjoy. Go Firebirds, and go Roadrunners.
