Choosing your child’s school is one of the most consequential decisions you’ll make as a parent. And yet most school tours follow the same script: pretty hallways, mission statement, classroom peeks, brochure in hand, “thanks for coming.”
That’s not enough information to make a real decision.
Here are five questions that cut through the polish and tell you whether a school is the right fit for your child. We’ll also share how we answer each one at Academy Del Sol, so you know what to expect when you tour our Tucson campuses.
1. “How will teachers actually know my child?”
The honest version of this question is: will my kid be a name on a roster, or a person?
Look for specific examples. A school that knows its students can tell you what individual kids are working on, what they’re great at, what’s hard for them. If you only hear generalities about “personalized learning,” push harder.
At Academy Del Sol, our class sizes are small by design. Teachers don’t just know your child’s name. They know what books they’re reading, what subjects light them up, and what makes a hard day easier. That’s not a marketing claim. It’s the actual reason families stay with us from kindergarten through eighth grade.
2. “What happens when a child struggles?”
Every child struggles eventually, academically, socially, or emotionally. The question is what the school does when it happens.
Look for a clear answer about intervention, support staff, and communication with families. Schools that have thought about this can describe it in detail. Schools that haven’t will give you platitudes.
At ADS, we have a dedicated Special Education team, English Learner support, and an Instructional Coach who works directly with teachers when students need extra help. When a child struggles, we don’t wait for parents to notice. We reach out.
3. “What does a typical day actually look like?”
Hours of academic time, hours of arts, recess, lunch, transitions. Get the real schedule. Schools that hide behind “every day is different” are usually hiding something specific.
Look for a real schedule, real teachers, real classrooms in session. Try to tour during the school day, not on a weekend or an in-service day.

4. “How does the school handle behavior and conflict?”
This is where school cultures show themselves. A school’s approach to discipline tells you everything about what they value.
Look for a philosophy that focuses on restoration and relationship, not just punishment. Ask about specific situations. What happens when two kids have a conflict? What happens when a child has a bad week?
At ADS, our approach is grounded in connection first. Our staff knows that behavior is communication, especially with younger children. We work to understand what’s happening underneath, not just react to the surface.
5. “What’s the parent community like?”
You’re not just choosing a school. You’re choosing the community of families your kid will grow up alongside.
Look for parent involvement opportunities, ways to volunteer, school events where families show up. Ask the tour guide if you can talk to a current parent.
